Outdoor and Environment Education

We emphasise the building of relationships between self, others and the environment. We see the environment not just as a place to serve our needs, but one in which we establish connection and a sense of place. We encourage reflection of personal values as a basis for awareness of self and interaction with others. Our programmes are typically journey-based within small-group settings.

We collaborate closely with the Outdoor Education Unit from the Ministry of Education to help develop expertise in this field.

Ecological Literacy - “Earth As Community”

This is a year-long elective programme that provides the basic 'language', understanding and knowledge for a change in thinking from a human-centered worldview to a nature-centered worldview needed for an ecologically sustainable culture.

A deeper and caring connection with nature is promoted by the acquisition of skills to be comfortable and curious in the natural environment. The concept of ecological literacy extends beyond environmental education knowledge to thinking critically about personal and cultural values, education, our sense of place and the recognition of disconnected environmental issues. The challenge is to encourage lifestyle modification and action as a conscious application of new understanding.

Adventure Leadership Programmes (ALPs)

We currently run 5-day journey-based leadership training programmes conducted overseas. The programmes emphasise decision-making in authentic and challenging situations.

This year, we are piloting a 16-Day ALPs for student leaders. This intense overseas experience in alpine environment will provide authentic settings for planning, problem-solving, and leadership. Students will better understand the importance of character and purpose in leadership.
